About IGCSE – the Danish Way
IGCSE is a two-year upper secondary Cambridge University programme developed to cover grade 9 and 10.
The Danish Efterskoler has created a special approved programme that you can do in just one year.
Instead of studying 7-8 electives over two years, the students only study the mandatory classes; English 2nd language, another 2nd language (German, French, Spanish etc.), Mathematics, Combined Science (Biology, Physics, Chemistry), and Global Perspectives.
This combination covers the minimum to receive the IGCSE diploma. It ensures that the student can apply directly for the next level, IB Diploma, at a Danish or international High School.
Admission Requirements
At least 15 years old
9 completed school years
Able to understand, speak, and write English. (Classes are taught in English)
Have access to a local contact family to visit in weekends, where the school is closed, for serious sick days, and to know someone besides school (the family is included in the GKX support programme)
Mature, independent, and committed to study in English

Exams and Diploma
Students who participate in the Cambridge exams receive an official diploma from Cambridge University that can be used for admission to the IB Diploma in Denmark or internationally. It is also a valuable document if the student wants to take an exchange year at high school or university later in life.
The “Efterskole” does not require students to participate in exams because grade 10 is not mandatory for Danish students to apply for Danish high school or other youth educations. Therefore, some Danish students mainly take the classes to experience studying in English.
We encourage our international students to participate in exams, as they are needed for admission at IB High Schools in Denmark and internationally.
Facts About the Danish Efterskole
Semi-private schools with full accommodation, including three healthy meals and 2–3 daily snacks each day. Vegetarian options and food allergy accommodations are available.
Students choose schools based on interests such as sports, music, or theater.
Many schools include domestic and international trips in their curriculum.
Adult supervision is provided 24/7.
Students return home for national holidays and special occasions.
Efterskole sizes range from 40 to over 650 students.
No uniforms; relaxed, friendly atmosphere with informal teacher-student relationships (teachers are called by their first names).
Students share small houses with 2–4 same-sex roommates, sharing chores and daily life.
Balanced focus on academics, interpersonal skills, and intercultural development. Strong emphasis on social skills and building lifelong friendships.
Get Your Cambridge Degree at an Efterskole
A growing number of Efterskoler offer international courses. Students can – parallel with doing their favourite sports and other activities – graduate from a Cambridge class, incl. full curriculum, graduation and diploma.
The combination of the Cambridge IGCSE class and a year abroad is a strong start towards your future goals. While improving your language skills, learning about culture, and establishing an international network, you will probably also find friends for life. Most international Efterskole-stays include 2-3 mandatory study trips during the year.
